Beyond the path there is a cliff. Beyond the cliff there is the sea. The island on the horizon appears to hover just beyond reach somewhere between sea and sky. In the Dreamtime stories of the Aboriginal people of south west Victoria it is called Deen Maar. It is the place where their creator being left the earth and went to the sky – a place beyond the reach of those still living. Now it is called Lady Julia Percy Island. It is a wildlife reserve and remains a place beyond the reach of all who don’t have a permit.
